UTILITY TECHNICIAN
SHENANGO COKE BATTERY
 
 
Location: Neville Island, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
 
GENERAL SUMMARY
 
The Utility Technician position is located at the Shenango Coke Battery on Neville Island in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.  The Coke Battery is a coke plant that produces coke from various types of coal blends.  The coke is used as fuel in the blast furnaces at the steel mills.
 
The Utility Technician is an entry level position that requires working a 12 hour rotating shift.  The work environment is heavy industrial and requires fire retardant clothing, steel-toed boots, hard hat, safety glasses and a respirator (when required in specific areas).  The Coke Battery is an outside plant, requiring work in high areas as times, and exposure to all types of weather conditions including heat of up to 130 degrees in the summer months, and cold temperatures in the winter months. 
 
Work involves using various types of equipment in the coke making process, to include duties such as shoveling coke, sweeping, and cleaning tar off equipment, sealing any environmental leakage from the coke ovens, and using various air tools to clean carbon from inside of pipes. 
 




A high school diploma or GED is required, with industrial or manufacturing experience in an operating discipline preferred, to provide the following:

* Good knowledge of the assigned area(s) of responsibility
* Ability to function within a matrix organization where employees report to both a functional leader and a business leader

PRINICIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
 
 
 
 
 

Technology Engineers are involved supplying technical support to both the maintenance and operating personnel. The individuals filling this position will also be required to interact directly with outside professional engineers as required to implement equipment upgrades. He/she will be a “hands on” individual. The engineer supporting the maintenance group will have expertise in, but not limited to, hydraulic systems, pumps and vibration analyses of rotating equipment. The engineer supporting the operations group    will have the ability to carryout material balances, heat balances and understand all the chemical reactions that are taking place. These positions require individuals that are self-directed, possess excellent problem solving skills as well as good interpersonal skills.  These positions will require the daily interaction with plant operating and maintenance personnel.

* Responsible for the implementation of business unit safety activities to meet or exceed organizational goals
* Maintains interpersonal relationships with individuals both external and internal to the organization
* Be an active participant of developing and maintaining a culture of professionalism
* Develops employees to maximize performance potential

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
 
A Bachelor’s of Science degree in either Chemical or Mechanical Engineering from an ABET/EAC accredited university,  previous engineering experience in a coke plant, chemical or petrochemical manufacturing facility is preferred, but not required to provide for the following:

* Have excellent communication skills particularly with other professional engineers
* Being proficient in making presentations, both oral and written, and be proficient with appropriate computer software applications
* Carryout failure analyses and determine the corrective action to prevent future occurrences
* Skills to analyze the process and determine any engineering changes required to improve product quality and reduce operating costs
* Ability to set expectations by defining the right outcome
* Ability to function within a matrix organization in which functional and business leaders have equal authority within the organization and employees report to both a functional leader and a business leader
* Ability to develop and maintain productive relationships with both a functional and business leader, who collaborate on employee issues and decisions (including performance management, compensation and development)

ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEER
 
Location: Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania


GENERAL SUMMARY
 
This engineering position is responsible for supporting development and asset management groups by responding to phone or drop-in inquiries regarding interpretation of regulations and other compliance-related needs. This position also represents the company through interaction with environmental regulatory agencies to obtain air, water supply, water discharge, and other necessary permits as well as assisting with the management of company assets to maintain compliance with those permits and all federal, state, and local environmental regulations. Work involves performing difficult and complex services requiring a high level of independent judgement, initiative and discretion. Work is mainly self-directed, with work results reviewed through the achievement of set goals and adherence to policies and procedures.
 
PRINICIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
 
§ Supervises professional and technical consultants
§ Provides guidelines, training presentations, and operational assistance to plant staff
§ Provides technical and strategic input for DTE Energy Services environmental programs
§ Develops and implements environmental related initiatives
§ Conducts plant audits to assess compliance with regulations and DTEES expectations
§ Performs all other related duties as assigned
 
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
A Bachelors degree (or equivalent) from an accredited college or university in an environmental related science field, with three to five years relevant experience managing environmental compliance activities and/or permit development, to provide for the following:
§ Knowledge of the regulatory process, plant operations, pollution control equipment design and function
§ Ability to identify, define, investigate and assess environmental problems
§ Knowledge of environmental assessments and due diligence activities
§ Strong working knowledge of regulatory requirements associated with utility assets
§ Strong organizational skills with the ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple tasks
§ Demonstrated problem solving and decision making skills
§ Ability to research and interpret environmental regulations for permitting and compliance strategy development
§ Ability to clearly and concisely communicate environmental regulations to all levels of staff and management
§ Ability to effectively relate environmental procedures to work force.
§ Working knowledge of MS applications, including Word and Excel, in a Windows environment
§ Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills and strong communication and presentation skills
§ Proven ability to take projects from start to finish without significant supervision
§ Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisor, coworkers, management, governmental agencies, and the general public

* Manufacturing experience in an operating discipline
* Strong safety experience
* Team Leading experience that demonstrates effective planning skills and an ability to manage and develop people
* Demonstrated organizational skills and presence through a track record of accomplishments
* Demonstrated capability to achieve results through people, technology and processing equipment
