ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEER
Location: Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
GENERAL SUMMARY
This engineering position is responsible for supporting development and asset management groups by responding to phone or drop-in inquiries regarding interpretation of regulations and other compliance-related needs. This position also represents the company through interaction with environmental regulatory agencies to obtain air, water supply, water discharge, and other necessary permits as well as assisting with the management of company assets to maintain compliance with those permits and all federal, state, and local environmental regulations. Work involves performing difficult and complex services requiring a high level of independent judgement, initiative and discretion. Work is mainly self-directed, with work results reviewed through the achievement of set goals and adherence to policies and procedures.
PRINICIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
§ Supervises professional and technical consultants
§ Provides guidelines, training presentations, and operational assistance to plant staff
§ Provides technical and strategic input for DTE Energy Services environmental programs
§ Develops and implements environmental related initiatives
§ Conducts plant audits to assess compliance with regulations and DTEES expectations
§ Performs all other related duties as assigned
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
A Bachelors degree (or equivalent) from an accredited college or university in an environmental related science field, with three to five years relevant experience managing environmental compliance activities and/or permit development, to provide for the following:
§ Knowledge of the regulatory process, plant operations, pollution control equipment design and function
§ Ability to identify, define, investigate and assess environmental problems
§ Knowledge of environmental assessments and due diligence activities
§ Strong working knowledge of regulatory requirements associated with utility assets
§ Strong organizational skills with the ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple tasks
§ Demonstrated problem solving and decision making skills
§ Ability to research and interpret environmental regulations for permitting and compliance strategy development
§ Ability to clearly and concisely communicate environmental regulations to all levels of staff and management
§ Ability to effectively relate environmental procedures to work force.
§ Working knowledge of MS applications, including Word and Excel, in a Windows environment
§ Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills and strong communication and presentation skills
§ Proven ability to take projects from start to finish without significant supervision
§ Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisor, coworkers, management, governmental agencies, and the general public
§ Ability to function within a matrix organization in which functional and business leaders have equal authority within the organization and employees report to both a functional leader and a business leader
§ Ability to develop and maintain productive relationships with both a functional and business leader, who collaborate on employee issues and decisions (including performance management, compensation and development)

WORKING CONDITIONS
The employee performs job duties in a climate controlled office environment, with a moderate noise level. Position requires travel to plant sites where noise levels and environmental conditions can vary.
